A great article regarding the perceptions of US Firms in the UK legal market. Some very honest reflections on both the perception and reality of how these firm operate. The clear message is that areas to address have been recognised and clear strategies have been put in place to do so.
Addressing the long hours culture and particularly gender diversity are featured strongly as areas the firms have identified as particularly important to their continued growth. This has already started to shift with a strong group of female leaders driving the firms from the very top. The challenge now is to continue to build on the pipeline of female talent coming through the ranks.
We are seeing more and more interest from US Firms looking to explore the structured work allocation approach. This is seen by us as a real commitment to supporting fairer distribution of work across the firms but also as a key enabler to support, and promote, gender diversity at all levels.
Perceptions matter. And so they should – particularly if your business has an image problem. As The Lawyer’s attitudinal survey of law students and associates that forms part of this year’s Top 50 US Firms in London report underlines, like it or not, many in this group are still viewed negatively by potential – and, in some cases, current – employees.
